Show Review: Derry Girls
November 18, 2024
In this show, we follow the friend group of Erin, Michelle, Clare, Erins cousin Orla and Michelles cousin James. They got to an all girls catholic school in Northern Ireland ( yes, James goes to the all girl catholic school ) in the late 1990s while there is intense conflict between the Irish and the English. We follow the group as they are growing up and learning what it is like to be people, what adulthood could look like, and taking matters into their own hands in regards to the future of the country that they live in. They get in all kinds of trouble, and are all filled with their own, fiery personalities. Erin seems to feel like she is going to be famous someday, Michelle is the “experienced” one of the group, Clare is the worrier who is always preparing for the worst, Orla is the ditsy one who is secretly very smart and James is the English boy who makes that the most of his personality.
If you have read any of my other reviews, you know I am a sucker for a coming-of-age story, and I loved that I got to learn ( very little mind you, but still some ) about happenings in Northern Ireland around the time I was born. ( Erin’s little sister, who is a baby in the show, is probably around my actual age. ) I suggest this story. It will make you cry laughing, laugh while crying and overall just fall in love with all the characters.
