Finding Inspiration
December 19, 2023
In the past, my art practice has been pretty heavily focused on people, because that was what I was inspired by. I loved learning about people and the way that the relationships we have shape us into the person that we are. More recently, I have been more drawn to nature than in the past. I have noticing myself lean more toward paintings of landscapes and animals rather than people. Rather than wanting to learn how to draw facial expressions, I find myself wanting to do research on flowers and sunsets. My camera role has gone toward footprints in the snow and the sun setting over the foothills, rather than faces of people with expressions I find interesting. This hasn’t been the case in my artists journey until now, and this shift feels freeing.
Painting people is hard for multiple reasons, but mostly because we all know it so well. It proved difficult for me to not draw how I think a face should look rather than what I was able to see. By finding a new subject matter I am able to lean more into painting from sight than painting how I think they should look. This also takes pressure off of me. Because there are less people who know exactly what the thing looks like that I am working on, that gives me a little bit of wiggle room for me to not make each piece perfect.
I am working on my upcoming collection that I hope to launch February 9th.
