Movie Review: Your Monster
February 7, 2025
I do want to start by telling you that I am going to completely ruin this movie for you, if you are wanting to watch it before reading this, I highly suggest it. This is your last warning, I am going to ruin this movie for you. Okay, I warned you.
This is a story about rage. One woman in particular’s rage. We follow the, very unfortunate, story of a young woman named Laura Franco, who is seemingly down on her luck. About a year before the movie starts, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer, and shortly after a pretty major surgery, her long time boyfriend breaks up with her. At this point, she is coming home to an empty house that was once her mother’s, and she discovers that there is a monster in her closet. At first she is terrified of him, but slowly they grow to be civil with one another. Going back to the relationship she was in before he broke up with her in the hospital, she and this man were in such a committed relationship that he had been working on a broadway show, and writing her in as the lead ( the characters name was Laurie Francis ). She had her hands all over in the role that he was creating for her, and then once it came time to start the show, she was not even told it was happening. There were other women auditioning for the part that was written for her by her. So, she showed up to audition for the role that was written for her, in front of the man that she had recently been dumped by. All the while, her parents have not come to see her after her, potentially life threatening, surgery and her best friend is doing the absolute minimum and patting herself on the back for it. After she does not get the role that was literally made for her, she is casted as her own understudy. She goes to a cast halloween party, dressed as the bride of Frankenstein, and stumbles in on her ex boyfriend with another woman, she assumes is the lead of the musical because he has been flirting with her all night. Her jealousy bubbles to the surface, and she talks to the monster about all the happened, and this is when she really falls in lover with him.
This movie is all about falling in love with your own rage. The monster is a personification of her deep rage, and in the end, she finally falls in love with her anger and the power that it gives her. She has been walked all over for most of her life, and this is there first time that she is willing to allow herself to not be the most palatable version of herself, and allow herself to be angry about things that really aren’t okay; a terrible boyfriend, a neglectful mother, a friend who is hardly willing to put in the bare minimum. She finally allows herself to be angry, and she is very happy to have found this side of herself.
I would warn you, this movie has a lot of Black Swan and Pearl in it, and if you are not a fan of some graphic bloody scenes, maybe forgo this movie for something a little sweeter. This was a pretty good movie, though, and I think I would suggest it to anyone who wants a horrific romcom.
