Movie Review: Damsel

March 20, 2024

This was such an interesting movie. You can tell from the trailer that it is going to be adventurous and exciting and all within a small place. The cast was pretty star studded for how much screen time was given to Millie Bobby Brown alone. This movie has the incredible Angela Bassett playing Elodie’s ( Millie Bobby Brown ) Stepmother, who loves her deeply and cares for her and her sister very well. The great Robin Wright plays the evil queen and looks absolutely stunning doing it. And Nick Robinson ( Love, Simon; Everything, Everything; The Kings of Summer ) plays the handsome young prince.

Elodie’s kingdom is wasting away and their land is unable to produce crops of even trees to keep the kingdom warm and fed, so her father sets up a match with another kingdom between Elodie and their prince in order to save his kingdom. Elodie happily accepts if it means that her kingdom will be happy and healthy and upon arriving at the kingdom she will be marrying into, and meeting the handsome prince who she will be married to, she feels even better about her choice. Shortly after her wedding ceremony and saying goodbye to her family, she has to attend another ceremony that the prince calls “honoring his ancestors” and ends up throwing his bride into a pit to get murdered by a dragon.

all of this is in the trailer, I did not give any spoilers

The costuming in this movie was gorgeous and the sets are absolutely exquisite. I would suggest watching this movie for this alone. The story was not flawless, ( it was actually really not the best writing ) but Millies performance was pretty close. The director did have her grunt rather often, when she should have been quiet, but that was not something that she could control. I really enjoyed this movie for the most part. While it was quite repetitive and there were definite plot holes, it was adventurous, grappled with forgiveness and duty as well as sacrificing for the greater good. It was magical and memorable. I would suggest it, but go into it without high expectations.
