Cozy not Lonely

February 7, 2020

I have always been someone who struggles with seasonal depression. The winter is dark and cold and lonely. It is something that I look forward to until it is actually here and that excitement dwindles away to dread.

I saw on an Instagram account that I follow she had asked how people deal with seasonal depression. There were a lot of really good ideas. Anywhere from going for walks regardless of the weather, yoga, making and eating a veggie stew, and getting out and about with friends and doing something that will make you laugh. She has a large enough following that she had responses from people all over the world, and one of the responses was from someone that lives in the Netherlands. They said that the winter blues weren’t a thing there; that the cold was looked forward to because it meant that there was going to be warm fires and cozy drinks and time spent with friends inside.

This blew my mind.

I had no idea that the winter blues was a mindset thing, I thought it was more of a vitamin D thing, but turns out i am wrong. They see it as a time of recuperation and relaxation filled with time being cozy and preparing for warmer months.

So this winter I am doing my best to read good books instead of mindlessly watching a show that I don’t care that much about anyway. I am eating warm soups when its cold and drinking hot tea rather than just ice water. I am doing my best to get myself out and about regardless of the weather and spending time with friends and family.

Wish me luck.
