Book Review: Mamo by Sas Milledge

August 19, 2024

I may have a new favorite graphic novel. Usually I am pretty partial to K. O’Neill, but Sas just pulled in to that running. Now I feel like I have to find everything they have made. Anyway, this book was not only beautiful, but also had so many lessons woven into the pages. There is magic in everything, life itself is magical and there is so much importance to finding friends that you can lean on and who can lean on you. Trust is, in and of itself, a form of magic.

We follow the journey of a young girl named Jo who is in search of the town witch after her mother has fallen ill and won’t wake. The previous witch had recently passed, and her granddaughter had show up, seemingly out of no where. With the help of the young witch, Orla, Jo sets off on a mission to not only help her mother, but the rest of the island that has been in disarray since the death of the witch, Mamo.

This book has adventure and excitement as well as magic and fantastical things all mixed up in such a beautiful package, I would suggest this to anyone and everyone. There is the beauty of friendship, love, family and knowing where you came from. I highly suggest this cozy, magical story.
