Book Review: Fly By Night by Tara O’Connor

February 26, 2024

This book was magical and mystical and beautiful. Being a graphic novel, the art matters a lot, and this novel did not disappoint. The illustrations were lovely and detailed while being expressive and really adding to the story O’Connor was telling.

The story takes place in a small town in New Jersey that has quite the folklore about the pine lands that surround it. Our main character is a high school senior named Dee whose twin goes missing and she has to come face to face with the fact that she doesn’t know her twin anymore. Her heart is breaking while she is trying to juggle going to a new school, mediating arguments between her divorced parents, help fight against tearing down the forest she grew up in and spearheading her own investigation as to where her sister could have gone.

I suggest this quick and magical read full of mystery, friendship, grief and standing up for what you believe in.
