Book Review: A Far Wilder Magic by Allison Saft

April, 22, 2024

I am going to spoil the whole review right now and tell you that I finished this in three sittings. I am also going to ruin it by telling you that I do not usually give out 5 star reviews, but I have no notes. I adored this book.

This book is defiantly more of an autumn read than it was a spring read, being that it was set in late autumn/early winter, but I am not mad that I got to read it this weekend because while it is late April here in Colorado, we have experienced quite a bit of snow this weekend, so it really worked out. Thanks Mother Nature.

A Far Wilder Magic follows the stories of Margret Welty and Weston Winters. Wes comes from a lively family in the city and Margret from the home of a cold, countryside alchemist. Wes is desperate to find an alchemist to take him under their wing and Margret is desperately just trying to stay afloat while her mother is out. Both Margret and Wes have had to grow up fast and learn quickly to either let their heartaches harden them or make them more compassionate. When Wes shows up on Margrets doorstep, she wants nothing to do with him, but quickly comes to rehab realization that he could be her ticket to getting her mom to come home.

This book has underlaying themes of bigotry, religion, love, hatred and accepting our differences. It is action packed and kept me on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out what would happen next. For so many reasons, this book feels extremely necessary. It touches on so many big things in such a fantastic way and so beautifully depicts the relationship between a young person and the life that they had once known.

Loved this book
