Winter To Do List: How to Beat Seasonal Depression

December 4, 2024

Happy winter! Something I have struggled with all my life is my dislike of the winter months, and the seasonal depression that comes along with it. This year I am going to do everything in my power to schedule a lot for myself so that I can enjoy the season and not get frustrated with it. Here is my list of things I am going to plan to make sure my winter is cozy and bright and not sad mopey.

  • go to as many Christmas festivals and celebrations as possible.

    • there is a restaurant in Iowa that sets the whole place up as a winter wonderland, and when we are back in Iowa to visit our families, we will for sure be visiting this cozy celebration.

    • we will be going to light shows and there is a North Pole amusement park here in The Springs that we will for sure have to go to. I would also love to find some Christmas concerts that we can go to close to where we are living.

    • the town that I grew up in had a full school system Christmas concert complete with carolers and decorations everywhere and I can’t imagine they are the only school that does that. I would love to see if there is anything close by that we could attend that would be similar.

    • Christmas markets and craft fairs and buy as many gifts as I can hand, or locally, made.

    • Christmas boxes for kids in need or donating clothes and toys to kids in need around the area.

    • wear matching pajamas with Eli and Lani ( my pup )

  • lots of ice skating.

    • Eli proposed to me while we were ice skating for my birthday, and I would love to go ice skating, and get better at it, this year.

  • go sledding or tubing.

    • I am not much of a winter sports gal, and even though we are right up next to the mountains, I do not see myself skiing or snow boarding unless I am forced to do so, but I would love to do some sledding or tubing this year and really enjoy the snow! There was a birthday of mine, I think it was my 13th birthday, that my friends and I went tubing to celebrate and it is still one of my favorite birthdays (second of course to the year that Eli proposed and surprised me with dinner with both of our families).

  • game nights.

    • I am not much of a games girl, but Eli loves them. I would love to spend winter nights curled up with cocoa and a fun board game that we are both really enjoying.

    • in this same category I am going to include puzzles. Eli also really enjoys working on puzzles, and it would be a lot of fun to work on puzzles together with cozy movies or music playing in the background.

  • new hobbies.

    • I have really wanted to lean into learning to bake for the last couple of years, and what better time than winter to bake to my hearts content?

    • this fall I got started on making some crocheted things, and I realized how much I really like to crochet. I would love to make toys for my nieces and nephews as well as making sweaters for myself and Eli.

    • discover a new hobby that I might enjoy. I don’t know what this is yet, but there are so many fun hobbies to do, why not try out some other hobbies?

  • read a lot.

    • this is nothing new, and nothing new to this blog. If you have been here fore a minute, you know I read a lot, but I have created a full list of books that I am going to read this season ( wish me luck, its really long ) and I have a feeling that I am going to find my new favorite book, or book series.

    • read things out of my usual interests. I have been really stuck in thrillers/mysteries and cozy fantasies, but I am not usually a romance reader because, to be honest, I find it boring. This season I am going to give other genres a chance and read some new genres. Who knows, maybe I will find a new favorite author!

  • hiking.

    • I want to make sure that I am really enjoying all the seasons and so I am going to make sure I spend a lot of time outside even in the colder months. Eli and I moved to the foothills so that we would have no excuses as to why we wouldn’t be spending time outside, so why not take advantage of it while we are living here?

    • there are plenty of cultures that find a lot of value in spending time outside in the cold, and who and I to tell them that I don’t agree? They know better.
