Taking Lani Out At 3am

October 19, 2020

It was raining when they got outside

But not a hard rain

One that, if it were cold enough, would be a romantic flurry of snow

And by the smell of the air and the sharpness of its kisses, it wasn’t far off.

Her skin was itchy from the cold and her heart was fluttering against its cage.

Autumn had always been a time of renewal for her:

A time for a fresh start.

This year felt no different.

With the coming of the cool air

A new hope filled her

The same way the new, cool air was a shock to her senses,

Her new hopefulness and excitement was invigorating and life giving.

Just the day before she had wept on her bathroom floor for all the life she could have lived.

And we don’t need to stir those things up again.

But today, even though the day hadn’t even started yet,

Her heart was made anew.

Instead of thinking of what could have been,

The cold air shook her into thinking of what could still be.
