Show Review: Trying

February 8, 2024

From start to finish, this show was delightful. Much like Ted Lasso, it does not shy away from the tough topics and the messy relationships, while still making it something that is easy to watch.

During the first season, we meet the main characters, Nikki and Jason. They are a couple that has been together for a while and feel like they are ready to start their family. They have tried ovulation tracking, IVF and are feeling like they are running out of steam and ideas. They go to the doctor to discuss their options and find out that it is highly unlikely that they would ever get pregnant at all, even with help. We follow their journey of grief and acceptance, but still feeling like they were meant to have a family. They start looking into adopting, thinking that they will be adopting an infant, but soon figure out that this is another thing they may have incorrect expectations for.

Throughout the three seasons of the show, we watch Nikki and Jason grieve, learn about themselves and have to shift and change their relationship as they face the idea of becoming parents. There is so much beautiful character growth; even the characters that I really didn't like in the beginning, ended up winning me over. We see what it looks like to believe in those you love, but not be afraid to tell them when they are doing something that hurts themselves and others.

I cannot recommend this show enough. It is deeply necessary and such a sweet and emotional show.
