Show Review: The Queens Gambit

December 1, 2020

I cannot say enough good things about this show. It was incredibly shot, casted, lighted, written, costumed, and pretty much everything else. My only thing is that there is substance use and abuse that I would caution younger viewers on.

It was a beautiful, seemingly tragic story that is inspirational and heartwarming. The story follows a young girl named Beth who loses her mom and has to go to a home for girls. An older girl named Jolene takes Beth under her wing and becomes a big sister to her. Still, Beth is very misunderstood by the strict home and feels put in a box. One day she is told to go and clean out erasers in the basement and she runs into the maintenance man who is playing chess by himself and Beth is instantly obsessed.

Netflix does an incredible job with a subject that could make a very sad and disheartening series into a very real and very hope-filled story. Just when it seems like something is going to go wrong, she is able to make it through, and not in a cheesy and fluffy way, but in a sweet and redemptive way.

I would highly suggest this show.
