Show Review: The Owl House
October 1, 2023
This show was along the lines of Amphibia without being too much like it. It has been hard to get over the ending of Amphibia, and we used this show as a band-aide, and this was a sweet little distraction.
This show is about a young woman who intentionally goes to another world when her mom is trying to send her to a camp to teach her how to grow up and become like everyone else. Of course, Luz, the young star of the show, is a quirky girl who loves all things witches and magic and would do anything to avoid going to a place that will put her in a box.
Along the way she meets Eda the Owl Lady, her very doglike demon, King and her house owl – Hooty. The first season just allows you to get to know the family and see how they become a family. You learn a lot about Eda and why she is the way she is and then that fades into Luz wanting to go into school. She makes friends, and enemies, and gets kicked out of school and then let back into school. The second season explores her journey through school and friendship and her first relationship. We also learn a lot about King and more about Eda’s back story. The last season is short and sweet and to the point. I didn’t end in tears, but it was a sweet and thoughtful ending.
This show touches on sweet and healthy relationships with parents and friends. It is a great example of acceptance and love of all different kinds of families. It also has examples of not great relationships with parents and shows that you can build a family with friends, even if your relationship with your parents is not a great one.
Overall, this show was sweet and spooky and a great October watch. It might not be suitable for young children, but elementary age kids would love it. I would recommend.
