Movie Review: My Old Ass

March 21, 2o25

I am going to come out right away and let you know that I am going to spoiling things in this review. This movie is so good and so worth the watch, I beg of you, please watch this movie before you read what I have to say.

I was expecting this to be a comedy. I really thought that I was going to be laughing the whole way through, instead, I am sitting here at the end of the movie, sobbing, and unable to stop for the next two hours.

We follow the story of a girl named Elliot who is turning 18 and cannot wait to get out of her ( absolutely gorgeous ) home and get out on her own in the fall. She is going to be going to the university of Toronto in the fall, and she cannot get there fast enough. Her little brothers are annoying ( they are actually so sweet) and her mom is too much ( she is actually so chill and such a lovely lady ), and this is her last summer of having to deal with it. Her friends decide to have a bonfire with her on a little island just off the coast ( I mean, come on, why would you want to leave? ) and they decide to do some shrooms. In Elliots trip, she meets her older self, and chats with her for a while. She tells Elliot that she needs to give their mom a break and that she needs to spend time with her brothers and whatever she does, stay away from a boy named Chad. The next morning, she has a new lease on life, and actually follows up, and spends time with her family members. She goes golfing with her brother and lets her other brother redecorate her room to be a shrine of Saoirse Ronan. Then, she meets a guy named Chad. She freaks out and runs away, racking her brain to see if her older self had told her a reason, and while doing so, she searches through her phone to see if she has her older selfs number. She does. She calls Older Elliot and, much to both of their surprise, it works. Older Elliot doesn’t give her a reason to stay away from Chad, just that she needs to, but throughout the movie, Elliot is finding it harder and harder to avoid this sweet guy who goes along with all of her bits and makes her feel so comfortable in her own skin. She has always thought that she was only interested in girls, but this guy is changing her mind. She is falling hard. When her older self won’t get back to her about if there is a real reason as to why she needs to be avoiding him, she falls head over heels.

I am going to stop here because I don’t trust that you went and watched the movie beforehand, and I really don’t want to ruin it all for you.

I cannot reccomnd this movie enough. While I would, in no way shape or form, call this a comedy, there were bits that were funny. But for the most part, this movie was so heartfelt. In it, we see loyal friendships and re connecting with family members and falling in love and finding ones self and dealing with grief of time past and the things we cannot change.

one last thing, please do not read this if you have not seen the movie.

the last scene with Aubrey Plaza in it, really felt extra hard to watch because of her husband passing away earlier this year. She didn’t know what was to come while filming this movie, but it feels a little like she did. I am crying even writing this.

Please just go see this movie.
