Book ( s ) Review: Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

January 13, 2021

I now understand the following. I now understand why there are pages and pages of fan art and fan theories on the internet. I now understand why having a Harry Potter world in Disney is such a big deal. This series was beautifully done.

Each book is written differently, and because it is a series, the reader is really able to get to know the characters and grow an attachment to them. Each character is dynamic and thought out; there is very little writing wasted. The series starts out at a young reading level, allowing the readers to be on the same level as Harry and are able to grow up alongside him as the books progress. As he gets older the reading level of the books becomes more and more advanced. The first book doesn’t get too frilly or difficult to understand, but as the years go by not only does the language advance, but the content grows in depth and richness. Rolling made a brilliant world full of magic and mischief and friendship. The reader is even able to see how Harry is growing up; the way his personality is developing over time. He starts out as a soft, sweet young man and then by Year 5 he is angsty and angry. He has been faced with quite a few scary, big, life events and he is feeling the weight of them all. By Year 7 we see how selfless, strong, and smart Harry is, but that it doesn’t always come easy. Harry is not perfect and that makes him all the more relatable.

Rolling’s series had action and adventure, suspense and horror, magic and mystery, all wrapped up in a tale of a boy coming of age surrounded by friendship and heartache. There is something for everyone in this timeless series.

My only complaint with the whole series is the epilogue. I really wish she would have just left that out. That would have also made way for her to continue the series and do a ten-years-later kind of thing, but having it in the book made if feel like she was ready to close this chapter – that she was done with this story.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone who has yet to read it. Even if you have seen the movies, I would suggest reading the books. The movies leave out sweet details that make reading the books all the more enjoyable.
