Book Review: Well Met by Jen DeLuca

November 11, 2019

So this was a book that I wasn’t even really trying to read, a friend of mine had it while we were at church and thrusted it into my hand thinking that I was next in line for it, so I gladly accepted it. Boy, am I glad I did.

This story starts out with Emily moving in with her older sister and niece soon after her they had both got in a pretty terrible car accident and Emily had gotten broken up with by her long-time scum-bag boyfriend. April, Emily’s sister, is unable to walk around and get normal house things done, let alone take care of a tween, so Emily steps in.

Like most of us, she is more than happy to have a reason to run from her heartache and fall into helping someone else out. Emily didn’t know her sister that well being that they were over ten years apart in age, but was still more than willing to uproot her heartbroken life to go take care of them. It’s just her luck that her niece, Caitlin, signs up for a renaissance fair in the small town they live in and, of course, she needs to have an adult sign up with her too. Emily is more than happy to step in.

This is a tale of a summer finding oneself and finding ones home – both in the location and in the people. Emily, throughout the story, finds confidence in herself and healing through friendships and romance. Like any good love story (this is where the spoilers come in), Emily does not like him at first, and slowly finds out that the loathing that she has been feeding has strangely morphed into love. This love is completely different and new and exciting but all the while she is terrified that he is going to treat her like her scummy ex boyfriend had.

Overall, would I read it again? No, but it was sweet and cute and predictable and, quite honestly, a little saucier than I was expecting! If you are looking for an easy, nostalgic, hopeful romance this is a good read.

It was really nice to read after so many thrillers and suspenseful stories – you have to break it up a little.
