Book Review: Verity by Colleen Hoover

August 1, 2023

I am going to come right out and say it: I expected more from all the hype that this book got.

I love psychological thrillers. They are my absolute favorite genre, but something I am very not fond of, is when I can predict the ending before it happens. A great example of a book I wasn’t able to predict the ending of is The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. This book is brilliantly written with many twists and turns and I would love to reread that book without knowing what happened. This book, on the other hand, I was predicting the end within the first couple chapters.

I was really hoping that I was going to be proved wrong and there would be a twist at the end. There was a twist at the end, but it was in no way as shocking as I wanted it to be.

All this to be said, I did fly through this book, and would consider reading more of Colleen Hoover in the future. It was a page turner, but the content was not what I wanted it to be.

Also, I feel like this may make me sound like a bit of a prude, but there was way too much sex in this book. For it not being not-that-large of a book, the smut took up a quarter of the reading time, if not more. Which felt like overkill. It felt like smut for smuts sake, not for addition to the storyline. There were scenes that I felt needed it, but even then, it felt less intentional due to the dramatic amount of it throughout the rest of the book.

I don’t know that I would ever recommend this book to anyone, but I do plan on giving Colleen Hoover another try sometime in the future.
